Proverbs 3:34
“Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble”. Maybe we misunderstood what grace is. Grace is getting something we don’t deserve i.e., “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). This would be grace given to sinners before salvation for the purpose of gaining faith for salvation. But the grace in our text is given “to the humble”, not to those who want to keep on sinning which is shown in the first part of the verse “He scorns the scornful”. Those who continue to willfully sin (purposely jump into sin) after salvation, do not receive grace, it is for those who slip or fall, the humble. A good illustration of this would be when I was cleaning the pool. I was inside the pool fence and our 2 yr old was following me. I told him not to jump in and to be careful. Halfway around the pool, I heard him hit the water, I turned and jumped in after him. When I got him out, he started crying and said he was sorry, I told him it was ok and I loved him. He got hugs and kisses because I could see where he “slipped and fell”, that’s grace given to the humble. Live a humble life, live a life in grace, live a life in His love.
