Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, Or as His counselor has taught Him? When was the last time you really considered who God is? I’ve heard so much about Him being our friend and seen His sovereignty diminished because of it. He has now become more of good ole buddy than a Holy God, and that’s how He’s being treated in all kinds of Christian circles. No more submission to the Creator of all things, no desire to know Him, and no obedience to His Holy Word. Let’s look at a few verses to help put this in proper perspective. “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, Measured heaven with a span And calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? Weighed the mountains in scales And the hills in a balance?” (Isaiah 40:12). Or, “He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name” (Psalm 147:4). He is not just a god, He is El Shaddai, Lord God Almighty. If we are such good friends, what is His name? Really good friends give each other counsel in times of need. I’ve been through the Bible over and over for the last 33 years and have never read of anybody giving God counsel. Our text for today is to remind us that we are not friends as we understand friendship. Abraham was called a friend of God because of his faith in action by giving up the one thing he loved most, his only son Isaac. Abraham didn’t give God counsel, he became submissive. What are we willing to give up for Him? When are we going to become submissive?
