Psalm 33:8

“Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.” Most people read just to say they read their Bible. How many take the time to understand what they read? There are two parts to this verse: the first relates to the earth, the second to the inhabitants. Eight times in the first chapter of Genesis, we read, “God said”, and it happened. Does the earth fear the Lord? In Exodus 14:21, we read, “Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided.” Psalm 97:5 tells us, “The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.” And in Mark 4:41b “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” If the earth fears the Lord, don’t you think we should? I’m not just talking about proper reverence and obedience; I am also talking about the wrath of God that will come on those who are disobedient. Now comes the tough part, standing in awe of Him. Before answering yes, let’s look at the Hebrew definition of the word “awe”, “to turn aside from the road”, have you fully turned aside from the road you used to travel, or still going back on it? Miriam Webster puts it this way, “an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority. Does the authority of God inspire you into emotional wonder and dread? We sing “I stand, I stand in awe of You, Holy God to whom all praise is due, I stand in awe of You! Do you?
