Job 2:10b
“Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” I love this verse because it puts our lives as Christians in proper perspective. Job spoke this after losing everything he and his wife had, their children, finances, the farm, they lost everything. Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!” (Job 2:9). As I was witnessing to a young man who came to our door trying to sell us hurricane windows and doors, I gave part of my testimony and he asked me how I can put up with such adversity from God and still be happy. I replied, “Because God is God to me, and no matter what we go through, God is still on the throne and in control”. Whether we are going through something God is allowing through an attack from the enemy as with Job (Job 1:1-2:8), a test, as with the Israelites in the wilderness, to see what’s in our hearts, (Deut. 8:2), or if it’s something we did and need to be brought back into submission to God as with David and Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11). If God is really God to us, we can get through anything that comes our way because He is on our side. Paul put it this way, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). We can’t say we love God if we only want good things and turn away from Him when things get bad. Are you like Job, accepting adversity as well as you do the good?
