  • 2 Kings 17:33

“They feared the Lord, yet served their own gods—according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away.” The King of Assyria took the Israelites, and the people he put there didn’t know the Lord God. And in verse 28 we read, “Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the Lord.” As I pondered our text for today, I asked why it said “They feared the Lord, yet served their own gods”? God answered with a glance at me. It’s something every one of us is probably guilty of. We go to church, serve, witness and for the most part, we do fear the Lord, yet deep inside we have a god or idol that we spend much more time with than with God. Financial thoughts, sexual thoughts, social media followers, work, and the list goes on. We could all use a good cleaning up, or in the words of Joshua, “Sanctify yourselves” (Joshua 3:5a). If we want to see God do great works in our lives, we need to get rid of the other gods we have, and cling to the true and living God, the Lord God Almighty! What would our lives look like if we came clean and spent that extra time with God?
