Hebrews 10:22a
“let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith”. The writer of Hebrews understood very well the Old Testament Covenant of who could come near, entering into the Holy of Holies. It was the High Priest, and that was only one time a year, behind the veil which now for us is His (Jesus’) flesh, having become the High Priest over the house of God (Hebrews 10:21). When we read the Bible, we must not exclude the Old Testament. You can read Jeremiah and see how many times the Israelites came to Him, but not with a whole heart. God wants those who come to Him to come with a whole heart. Jesus quoted from the Old Testament, so in following Him, we too must learn it to understand more of our lives in Him. In our verse today, the writer is telling us that to draw near to God, we need a true, or sincere, heart. He’s not interested in hypocrites, or those that come to Him for what they think He will give them. Putting it in plain English, “completely confident in fidelity to Him for salvation because we see our need through His eyes”. There is no other way “to live and move and have our being in Him” (Acts 17:28), until we have drawn near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.
