Genesis 2:16

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” In Genesis 3:1-7 we see sin enter the world when Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit. There are some things that are worth noting here, the first is that there weren’t millions of people, only 2. The second thing to note is that they sinned before the 10 commandments were ever written to let them know what sin was, but we all became sinners because of one man’s sin. The sin was disobedience to God’s Word. The third thing to notice is God’s mercy, even though there were only 2 He loved them with the same love He loves us. And finally, their 1 sin didn’t end there, it snowballed into other sin. Their eyes were opened and they saw that they were naked, purity was gone. They tried to cover their sin instead of confessing it, trust was broken. Finally, they hid from God, relationships were tarnished. Jesus’ death and resurrection brought us back into a right relationship with God. We saw last week that we are to “cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Corinthians 7:1), purity is back, and since disobedience was the 1 sin that started it all, our obedience to God’s Word will help us continue to maintain that trust, purity and relationship. Are you obedient to God’s Word?
