John 1:4
“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” Jesus came to bring us to spiritual life, which is the Greek word (Zôç), here in our text. When we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we go from being alive physically to being alive spiritually. Now the second part of the verse is that with the life coming into us, something else happens, there is light. The word light means shining. But what are we shining, or supposed to be shining? That life that entered us is Christ and it is the Light of His Glory we are supposed to be shining. I will use an illustration to help us understand what that is like. The moon reflects the light from the sun but as the earth and moon rotate around the sun the world gets in the way and we only see a sliver of the moon, ¼, ½, and even ¾’s of the sunlight reflecting before we see the full light of the sun’s reflection in the moon. We are to reflect the light of the SON Jesus Christ, which is the light of life. When people look at you, how much of the world gets in the way of them seeing the full light of the Son shining through? The more time you spend in the Word and prayer, the less time you’ll spend desiring the things of the world, and the brighter that light will shine. So do as Isaiah said, “Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you” (Isaiah 60:1).
