Matthew 20:28
“just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” When we serve, we are to do it with the attitude that Jesus had. This is seen in what He told the disciples in the previous verses, “but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave” (Matthew 20:26b & 27). I can illustrate it this way. It was Christmas Eve, we had guests coming over for dinner and I was helping my wife prepare dinner. I got a text asking if I could pick up a missionary from the airport at 5:30. I first texted and told them what was going on, then texted back and told them I would be there realizing they would be stranded and I remembered today’s verse. When we give our lives to serving others it will not always be convenient but it will always be a blessing, to both those being served and the servant. Our dinner plans continued and everyone enjoyed themselves, the missionary used the car to go visit a friend and had a blessed time as well. I always love the William McDowell song “I give myself away”. It’s about being a true servant. God’s plans always work out the best when we give our lives. After all, we’re serving HIM.
