Matthew 4:4

“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” I always instruct people that when they see the words “it is written” to search and find where it is written. In this case, Jesus was quoting Deut. 8:3 (see Deuteronomy 8:1-3). I would like to point out here that Jesus didn’t say the Bible is a smorgasbord where we choose what we like and skip what doesn’t appeal to our appetite, yet that’s the way some read the Bible if they read it at all. He said, “every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”. Proverbs 30:5 tells us, “Every word of God is pure;” With that in mind, let’s see the pure word of God and how it applies for us to live. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1), “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14a). Jesus is God come in the flesh and dwelt among us, lived a humble life, died the agonizing death we should die, rose from the grave 3 days later according to Scripture, and all who receive Him He gave the right to become children of God to those who believe in His name (John 1:12). You can survive on bread alone, you cannot live on bread alone you need the pure Word of God which will bring you to, and keep you in, eternal life. Are you just feeding your body, or are you feeding your soul with every word that proceeds from the mouth of God? Do you know someone who needs to feed on the pure word of God and be revived to life?
